Animals don’t ask for much, but they deserve better, and we're here to do what others won’t: train civilians to rescue, rehabilitate, and release Australian native animals back into the wild.
If knowledge is power, then it’s our mission to share and create a legion of trained wildlife carers in the North East of Victoria and beyond.
We are committed to more than just a hero moment for ourselves; we believe in providing real care that gives every creature a fighting chance. The more people we can train, the greater the impact we can have. So are you ready to join the Wildside? -
We’re not running a petting zoo, and this isn’t all about selfies with cute baby animals. We rescue, rehabilitate and release wildlife throughout the Benalla & Strathbogie districts.
But more than that, we’re here to train a new generation and network of wildlife carers who want to get stuck in, learn the ropes, spread the word and help us get injured and orphaned animals back where they belong: in the wild.
If you’re ready for some mud, mess and proper hands-on experience, you’re in the right place. Scroll down page for more detail on how to volunteer and get involved. -
The hardest part about getting involved in wildlife rescue work is knowing where to start, and what to do. Wildside Wildlife Shelter to the rescue - spreading the word through:

While we will never declare ourselves experts, we have years of real world experience to share on how to assess, treat, handle and release native animals safely.
This includes a network of species specialists, successful release strategies and practical skills in raising macropods from pinkie through to release. We seek to freely share our knowledge with others in the name of better outcomes for the animals in our care. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer on a regular basis at the shelter then please get in touch. -
There is no point raising wildlife if you don’t have a safe and appropriate release site. It’s the missing piece of the puzzle for so many carers, and can mean the difference between a long healthy life and a short, unhealthy one for the animals we put our heart and soul into caring for..
Wildside Wildlife maintains and privately funds a 230-acre release site backing onto state forest and plantations, suitable for several species of local wildlife raised in care. Our goal is to support other shelters and carers from the NE regions in safely and successfully releasing animals raised in care. Contact us for more details via forms below.

VOLUNTEERING
To loosely quote George Washington in Hamilton the Musical, “We can not be everywhere at once people. We are in dire need of some assistance.” Assistance with rescues, bottle feeding, washing, cleaning and all the daily tasks that come with running a wildlife shelter.
Keep your eyes posted on our socials (Little Farm of Calm and Wildside Wildlife) for specific times and help we need, or get in touch on the form below if you’ve got some special skills to offer. It doesn’t all involve claws and poo. Roles include:
Transporters - help getting animals where they need to be (no blood and guts involved)
Rescuers - Pouch checks, assessment of injuries, extra troops for the tricky calls
Laundry Angels - we’re on tank water here & there’s a drought. Could you run a load of animal bedding for us on a weekly basis? Or perhaps you could sew some pouches for the little ones.
Onsite Volunteers - Can you commit to a regular shift to help us feed, clean up and look after animals in care?
-
DONATE / SPONSOR
We won’t sugar coat it - this is a tough gig and we are not government funded. We rely on funds from Little Farm of Calm retreats and help from the local community to pay for medicines, vet bills, milk formula, hay, shelter, washing, bedding, petrol … you get the gist. Our time we give freely, but for all the rest of it, we could use your support.
We’ve compiled a list of things we desperately need for the shelter and animals in need of sponsorship. You decide how you’d like to help, or get in touch if you’ve got ideas. With the average animal costing $2000-3000 to get through to release, we need all the help we can get.
Payments can be made as a one off or as a regular contribution scheduled through our website using stripe for credit card payments OR get in touch to set up via your preferred method.

How can you help?
It’s pretty busy here most days and there’s not a lot of time to sit at the computer. So if the matter is pressing PLEASE CALL US on 0417 057 056.
Otherwise, there is a chance that it will take us a couple of days to get back to you (depending on what is going on around here). If you don’t hear back from us by then, please try again or give us a call as things sometimes slip through the cracks …
